Three Years to Heal - A Story of Forgiveness
There are some stories that can really inspire people; stories of the impossible, the miraculous. The kinds of stories that can build character and make people think that such good exists in this world.
Well, forgiveness stories are one type of these.
Forgiveness Stories
This is a simple story of forgiveness. While cleaning out my room in preparation to move to a new home, I dug up some old paper; mostly my drawings, old lectures from college, exam notes and the like. Then I came across a piece of paper which had on it a print out of a chat conversation from three years before.
It was a conversation between me and an old friend and, for some delicate reasons, we had drifted apart from each other all those years ago, somewhat bitterly. The conversation was done when we were still very close, and we were talking about courtship. The gist of it was something like this:
Him: I liked her, you know.
Me: Wil you be able to move on? That was a long time ago.
Him: Well..
Me: Just watch out for the day, years from now, when all this will just be a funny experience, and when you see her, you can laugh about what transpired today.
Him: Ahaha, yes, that'd be great.
I laughed when I read that, and realized that this day was the day, three years into the future, when we should patch up. So, after three years of no contact, I wrote him this email:
Hey,
Is it finally time to laugh about it?
He called me up next morning. I realized then that he forgave me a long time ago, but was just afraid that I hadn't forgiven him. Thinking back, I hadn't really thought much or lost sleep over our fight. He was afraid for a long time over nothing, and, thinking that he hadn't forgiven me, so was I, a little bit.
We really did laugh at the whole experience, talked for hours trying to catch up, but there was no way to make up for the lost time, even if we did promise to have lunch a few times a month.
At the end of the conversation, he said one thing: "I'm glad you sent that email."
And so was I. This is just a little forgiveness story. There are more out there, with more complex situations and feelings. But in the end, all that matters is that we forgive, no matter how long it takes, whether it be three years or three minutes.
